![]() Minimalism is an artistic movement that emerged in the late 1950s, with artwork by artists such as Frank Stella beginning to move away from the abstractionism of the previous generation. Minimalist artist Frank Stella said of his paintings "What you see is what you see". The medium (or material) of which it is made, and the form of the work is reality. ![]() With minimalism, no attempt is made to represent an external reality, the artist wants the viewer to respond only to what is in front of them. We tend to think of art as representing something from the real world (a landscape, a person, or even a can of soup!) or reflecting on an experience such as an emotion or feeling. Minimalism or minimalist art can be seen as an extension of the abstract idea that art should have its own reality and not be an imitation of something else. Minimalism is an extreme form of abstract art developed in the US in the 1960s, characterized by works of art composed of simple geometric shapes based on the square and rectangle. ![]() The show included works by Dan Flavin, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Carl Andre and Donald Judd, who presented geometric and formally reductive artworks.Daciano da Costa e a Arquitetura de interiores It was the first American museum to present this style of art, and the exhibition received great critical acclaim for introducing a new visual lexicon to the Western art canon. One of the main events that established Minimalism art was the 1966 ‘Primary Structures’ exhibition at the Jewish Museum in New York. In 1967, Sol LeWitt published ‘Paragraphs on Conceptual Art,’ which elevated the importance of the idea and the process of the conception and realisation of the works of minimalist art over the aesthetic features. Robert Morris’s ‘Notes on Sculptures’ from 1966 called for the use of simple forms that the viewer could grasp intuitively and argued that the interpretation of the artworks depended on the context and conditions in which it was shown. Judd rejected traditional distinctions between art forms in order to embrace works that were not so easily labelled as painting or sculpture. Donald Judd’s 1965 article ‘Specific Objects’ attempted to establish the aesthetics of Minimalism. Several artists published articles during that period, which helped to shape and define the minimalist art movement. Key artists: Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre, Sol Lewitt, Frank Stella, Agnes Martin, Robert Morris, Mary Corse, John McCracken, Larry Bell, Robert Irwin. Key words: abstract sculpture and painting, geometric shapes, light installations, New York, West Coast The personal, gestural elements were stripped away with the aim to reveal the objective, visual elements of art. These artists wanted to create art that referred only to itself, allowing the viewer an immediate, purely visual response. Each of these groups had pioneered radical abstraction, and inspired artists like Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and Robert Morris to explore new directions in their art. In that period, works by the Dutch De Stijl artists, Russian Constructivists, and members of the German Bauhaus were being shown in New York. ![]() Earlier European abstract movements greatly influenced American minimalist art creators. The Minimalism art movement is one of the most influential of the 1960s, emerging in New York City among a number of young artists who were moving away from Abstract Expressionism and favoured a sleek, geometric aesthetic instead, which would manifest itself in minimalist art.

So you've got a lot of sort of mitigating circumstances. They're at a slight disadvantage because they're already at baseline of not feeling very good. People who start out with chronic pain or start out with depression, those people are going to be maybe more likely to seek out rewards initially just to feel better. Not everybody starts out with a level balance. Some pleasure-pain balances can restore homeostasis more quickly and more easily and maintain a more robust restorative response than other people's balances. One of the factors is that person's own propensity to, let’s say, want to push the envelope, to repeat that experience and have it again more intensely. That is moderated by a lot of different factors. It’s manageable, and the stimulus remains pleasurable without diminishing much over a very long period of time. But the amplitude isn't so great that it affects overall wellbeing. Theoretically, there's always that sort of tilt to pain, or that moment of wanting another cookie, or more of whatever it is. There may not be a lot of tolerance initially, especially if it's a subtle pleasure and we don't indulge too often. First, the cost really may be very subtle. So does that mean that pleasure always comes at a cost? That's one of the key premises of Dopamine Nation: from a larger, sociocultural perspective, the rising rates of depression, anxiety, suicide may indeed be because we're all eating too many cookies.īoth literally and metaphorically. When you're not eating a cookie, you feel bad, and you need to keep eating cookies just to feel normal again. Because if you eat many cookies-just using cookies as a placeholder really-every day for many, many days, what essentially happens, if it's a very potent and powerful cookie or you eat enough of them, is that your brain ends up working so hard to compensate for all of the cookies that it essentially changes the hedonic or joy set point, so that you can't enjoy anything else. That is how addiction occurs and hijacks the brain. The other dimension is that with repeated cookies, that initial dopamine surge gets weaker and shorter, but the aftereffect-the dopamine deficit state-gets stronger and longer. And then when you stop eating the cookie, there's a dopamine deficit, meaning now your balance is tipped towards pain, and that drives the craving? Obviously, there's the extreme case of drugs. It’s these fluctuations from high to low that drive the actions and the intense work that organisms do to get the thing that was reinforcing. ![]() So dopamine mediates not just the highs, but also the lows. What’s salient is not just the rise in dopamine, but also the intense decreases that go below baseline levels, which is exactly what causes craving or feelings of withdrawal. The way I try to depict that in the book is this pleasure-pain balance. It’s not this unidimensional kind of brain currency. But dopamine can also be released with really intense painful stimuli. We know that things that are addictive, that is if they're highly reinforcing, release a lot of dopamine in the brain's reward pathway. Certainly, when we experience something new and pleasurable, we get a release of dopamine. That's a simplified impression of dopamine. ![]() But we feel helpless against the pull of compulsive overconsumption.ĭopamine is not just associated with pleasure. That’s in part because, like her patient Jacob, we don’t necessarily want to be caught in the endless pursuit of pleasure. The problem is that, at a time when many of us are overindulging in pleasurable pursuits, we don’t seem to be feeling all that good. Lembke argues that though we might think of “addicts” as those who compulsively abuse things like drugs or sex, in the age of accessible, cheap, sensory pleasures, most of us have unhealthy attachments to something-maybe it’s Netflix, Twitter, or, in Lembke’s case, romance novels. “But if we do that, you and I, we miss an opportunity to appreciate something crucial about the way we live now: We are all, of a sort, engaged with our own masturbation machines.” “Perhaps you are repulsed by Jacob’s masturbation machine, as I was when I first heard about it,” writes Lembke. If this sounds like an aggressive way to start a book, well, that’s the point. Anna Lembke, a psychiatrist working at Stanford University, tells the story of a patient who masturbated for hours a day using a machine he personally MacGyvered. In the first pages of her book Dopamine Nation, Dr. ![]() This would be compatible with 32 bit and 64-bit windows. You can also donate by mail to: Farmersville Fire Company 74 E Farmersville Rd.
